Public Health & Safety, Inc. is a Chicago, Illinois-based environmental consulting and training company. We offer environmental consulting services, and work with the USEPA and IDPH in resolving asbestos cleanup compliance agreements.


About Us

Public Health & Safety, Inc. (PHSI) is a Chicago-based firm with professional and technical competence in public health, chemistry, toxicology, exposure assessment, occupational hygiene, employee training and awareness, environmental abatement project management, and air sampling. Its predecessor, Public Health & Safety Associates, was established in 1982 to provide health and safety consulting services for The American Hospital Supply Corporation.

Our Services

We are experienced and qualified in these areas:

•Project Management: Field testing of air, water, and solids. Bulk sampling, hazard assessment, development of management control options, budgets and specifications for indoor and outdoor waste contaminants.


•Project Design: Budgeting and management of asbestos abatement, mold remediation, and lead-based hazard control projects.


•Real Estate: Environmental and financial risk management support services for federally subsidized property maintenance and re-development operations.


•Training and Awareness Programs in the occupational and environmental health and safety field. Our most recent addition being the EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Initial and Refresher courses.


Our Staff

Nicholas Peneff, Dr.PH, CSP is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a licensed Project Designer for asbestos projects in Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1986 with degrees in Environmental Occupational Health Science (EOHS) and Public Health management. Dr. Peneff has worked on HUD-funded research projects and several advisory boards relating to childhood lead-poisoning prevention. He has also provided expert opinion in litigation involving toxic exposures, product safety design, emergency action planning, and environmental abatement project safety procedures.
